In the popular imagination, the space sector is still defined by the visual language of launchpads, astronauts, and deep space exploration. But talk to Rebecca Huffee, Cluster Manager of Space West, and a different picture emerges — one grounded in infrastructure, economic strategy, and the power of regional ecosystems to shape national ambition.
Since its formal establishment in 2023, Space West has become a central node in the South West’s space innovation landscape. Hosted by the National Composites Centre, supported by the UK Space Agency and born out of the earlier West of England Space Hub, the cluster is part convenor, part connector, and increasingly, a strategic lens through which to reframe space not as an abstract scientific endeavour but as a critical enabler of modern life.
“I’m not a space evangelist in the traditional sense,” Huffee says. “I don’t follow rocket launches or memorise planetary missions. What interests me is what space unlocks — and how we support the people doing that work.”
That pragmatic focus is timely. The UK’s ambition to position itself as a global leader in space must be underpinned by more than flagship launches. In Huffee’s world, the sector’s health is measured not by headlines, but by a mesh of mid-sized businesses, hidden capabilities, and overlooked potential.
The latest Size and Health of the UK Space Industry report places the South West as the third-largest cluster in the UK by number of space-connected organisations — over 300, by current estimates. But Huffee argues the reality is even more expansive. Many companies aren’t coded as “space” on paper. Some support the sector through data science, cybersecurity, or precision engineering. Others, such as patent attorneys or consultants, play critical but invisible roles in the space value chain.
“There’s a huge amount of latent capability that gets missed by formal definitions,” she explains. “If we want to grow the UK’s role in space, we have to broaden our understanding of what the space sector is and who contributes to it.”
This systems-level thinking is a hallmark of Huffee’s work. She describes her role as less about technical expertise and more about pattern recognition — spotting connections, mapping potential collaborations, and identifying the policy and infrastructure gaps that make scaling in the region difficult.
The challenges are real. Despite its innovation density, the South West faces structural hurdles: high operating costs, limited access to specialist facilities, and a funding environment that still favours early-stage over scale-stage ventures. Huffee points to cases where promising companies have relocated simply to gain access to test beds or more affordable manufacturing space. “We have an extraordinary pipeline of innovation,” she says. “But without the right infrastructure, we risk becoming a launchpad — not a home.”
One of the most pressing frontiers she’s exploring is the convergence of space and cybersecurity. A recent NATO paper warned of growing vulnerabilities in commercial space assets — which, while not traditionally classed as defence, underpin everything from GPS navigation to economic systems. Huffee sees this as a call to action.
“We tend to think of defence in terms of military hardware. But today, threats are more likely to come from digital destabilisation, IP theft, misinformation, or the interruption of services we rely on every day. Space is part of that critical infrastructure, and we need to protect it accordingly.”
Her concern is not hypothetical. From ransomware attacks on UK retailers to geopolitical tensions playing out in data space, the line between economic security and national security is blurring. In that context, she argues, the conversation must shift toward “societal resilience” — recognising that modern defence includes safeguarding supply chains, communications, and the knowledge economy itself.
And yet, the narrative isn’t all risk. The opportunities are profound — especially when space innovation aligns with Earth-bound challenges. Huffee highlights Space Forge, a company born out of the region are developing reusable spacecraft to manufacture advanced materials in orbit. Their goal: create more efficient semiconductors, which could accelerate the shift toward net zero technologies. “That’s the kind of innovation that reframes the sector,” she says. “Not just what happens in space, but what space makes possible for Earth.”
She also notes the surge in interest around in-orbit servicing, satellite decommissioning, and space debris mitigation. “It’s a sign of the sector maturing. We’re not just launching — we’re cleaning up, optimising, planning long-term.”
What about the more speculative projects — like space-based solar power, or lunar mining? “They’re no longer science fiction,” Huffee says. “The technologies exist. The bottleneck is in demonstrating viability — which means funding, infrastructure, and a policy environment that supports iteration.”
On this point, she’s candid about the UK’s position. “SpaceX has reset the pace. We in Europe need to respond, not just with vision, but with speed. Our mission cycles are too slow. We can’t afford to treat space as a niche R&D playground. It’s strategic.”
Ahead of the anticipated launch of the UK Industrial Strategy, Rebecca is optimistic about the South West’s potential. “This region has a strong interdisciplinary base — from aerospace to photonics to quantum. The question is how we convene those strengths, create shared infrastructure, and keep talent here.”
For Rebecca Huffee, space is not an end in itself. It’s a platform — for economic transformation, societal resilience, and rethinking what regional growth can look like in an era of global complexity. Her work sits at the intersection of capability and connectivity, helping ensure the South West doesn’t just watch the future of space unfold — but actively shapes it.
