Project Manager at Unlock Cyber
How did you first get into tech/innovation?
I was involved in developing employability skills in young people when I was approached by representatives in cyber to ask if I would create a project to help raise awareness and develop cyber skills in young people.
What did your career path look like before landing your current role?
Previously I’d spent over 20 years as MD of an event management company. This provided an opportunity to manage some amazing projects including the WorldWide Web Conference. Since I really enjoyed working on big projects I eventually decided to sell the company and become a project manager.
What does your role involve day-to-day?
As project manager my role involves engaging with employers and other partners to create activities and resources for young people that will raise interest and awareness of what cyber is all about. School engagement is key so another main role is to communicate with education providers about opportunities we can provide. Essentially a one-stop shop about cyber!
What challenges have you faced working in tech, and how did you overcome them?
I haven’t really faced any challenges other than clarifying my role. I do not come from a tech background, therefore this is not my area of expertise. I therefore call myself a project enabler. By bringing together a team of experts my role is to understand what Unlock Cyber is trying to achieve and finding the right experts to provide the solutions.
Was there a moment or opportunity that helped you break into the industry?
My passion was and still is helping young people develop their employability skills to give them the confidence to achieve. I set up projects to achieve this on a voluntary basis. It was through this that I was approached by University of the West of England to continue this work. When the opportunity arose to work with cyber employers UWE agreed for me to set up Unlock Cyber.
What advice would you give to women who want to work in tech or innovation?
Go for it! I’ve never struggled working in tech. Surround yourself with a great team of people who are willing to help and support you.
What do you love about working in the South West tech ecosystem?
It’s a fantastic community. There’s loads of support, advice and opportunities out there.
