The city has already had a 90ft waterslide down one of its main streets, so how could Bristol top that? How about an 800m long zipwire across Avon Gorge passing under the Suspension Bridge where you could reach speeds of 70mph? That should do it.

The Bristol Post has revealed suggested plans for the zipwire project from Destination Bristol which would be provided by Welsh zipwire experts Zip World.

John Hirst, the chief executive of Destination Bristol, told the Bristol Post: “When you are looking for a unique selling point for the city, this is it. It would be fantastic to have a zip wire from which you can look over the city centre as you fly through the air. It would bring a new audience and give people another reason to come to Bristol.

“My dream is that someone who lives in Clifton and works in Bedminster could get there by zip wire!”

Zip World commercial director, Sean Taylor, knows it’s a challenge: “We do realise this is an audacious plan and we understand that some people will be opposed.”

However, he has already spoken to the mayor of Bristol and the Downs Committee, and thinks it could do a lot for the city: “The mayor wants Bristol to be known as the fun city of the UK and this will do that.”
