Update: You can get a more up-to-date idea of where the Bebod story is now by checking out our profile: How Bebods took on the world from Bath, one body part at a time
Bebods, our social media startup for children, is fun and we’re not going to forget it. But we were feeling uncharacteristically serious for a moment, so we decided to look up some top tips for starting a business.
James Caan (that beardy bloke from Dragons Den) reckons we should…
…think like an investor
…challenge our assumptions
…use the power of technology
…land our first order
…research loads
…grill our idea
…not be paranoid
…not change the world
…realise our first idea doesn’t need to be our final one
…work out if we have the right DNA
Those all sounded pants and faintly depressing – the rain has put paid to any grilling till next summer and we only have our parents to blame for our DNA – so I moved on.
Virgin territory
Branson (that beardy bloke who signed the Sex Pistols (legend)) was much more up our street:
…listen more than talk
…keep it simple
…take pride in your work
…have fun, success will follow
…rip it up and start again
These made more sense to us, and happily we think we are already following some of these points.
“At bebods HQ our marvelous artists have been having fun producing simple, beautiful worlds for bebods to live and play in”
Over the last week at bebods HQ our marvelous artists have been having fun producing simple, beautiful worlds for bebods to live and play in. They may not be where we started (we’ve ripped them up) as we’ve listened to each other and other people’s feedback, but we’re mighty proud of them.
Bebods World will be many things, but at its core it will be a fantastically rich, fun visual social network of a world, where kids can hang out, play, learn, create their own world and more. We can’t wait to show it off at Web Summit in November.
And, we have our first bebods couple – Mr & Mrs Jones! (See right.) Remember, if you post a picture on our Facebook page you might even get your own bebod made!
Oh, and we will change the world Mr Caan!
Garry & Glynn
Bebods is the result of almost a year’s creative collaboration between Glynn Hayward (founder of BAFTA-awarding winning creative agency, Complete Control ) and Garry Pratt (co-founder of Teachit, a pioneer in UGC and freemium models in education).
