Creative England and Crowdfunder have joined forces to find and fund England’s female game developers and freelancers via an innovative crowd-funding campaign – Queen Of Code.
Thanks to Creative England, an organisation dedicated to the growth of the creative industries, UK-based crowd-funding platform Crowdfunder has£15,000 of match funding available for women in the industry who are looking to create, write, design, build and develop games.
A widely reported 49% of gamers in the UK are women but only 12% of the people making the games are female. This partnership aims to put the creative juices of the female counterpart of the industry into the spotlight, jump-starting more opportunities across the board.
“We know there are some incredible female devs out there, and it’s important for us to work with the industry to even out the playing field”
Jaspal Sohal, Head of Games & Digital at Creative England, said: “We regularly support games studios across the English regions but we don’t see nearly enough female developers putting applications in.
“We know there are some incredible female devs out there, and it’s important for us to work with the industry to even out the playing field. We hope that ‘Queen of Code’ will help women in the industry engage with us through this exciting collaboration with Crowdfunder, and ultimately enrich an already blossoming games sector in the UK.”
“This campaign should help amplify female voices and skills in what is often considered a male dominated sector”
Phil Geraghty, MD of Crowdfunder said: Phil Geraghty, MD of Crowdfunder said: “The Queen Of Code campaign is the first of many that we will be launching with Creative England, helping to fund and discover the best creative talent in England.
“This particular campaign with Creative England is just what the industry needs to throw the spotlight on the fantastic talent the gaming industry has – and to amplify female voices and skills in what is often considered a male dominated sector.”
How does the Queen Of Code campaign work?
1 – Women in England who are interested in receiving match funding for their game-development projects need to upload a Crowdfunder project (min. £2k target) to raise funds from their communities.
2 – Crowdfunder Coaches will be on hand to help all project owners set up and launch their campaigns, along with expert advice on how to promote and reach out to their audiences.
3 – Once the projects have funded, the five successful campaigns with the most supporters/backers will each receive £3,000 on top of their crowd-funded projects.
