The Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) at the University of Bath combines data analysis and mathematical modelling to help turn data into good decisions and fantastic insight – and it is launching on Wednesday October 28, this week!
Already with impressive projects in the pipeline including air pollution monitoring with the World Health Organization and electricity forecasting with Western Power Distribution, it’s clear that there’s more to the IMI than complex equations.
“There is huge potential for maths to add value to every industrial sector”
The IMI is all about collaboration and its launch will showcase some of its research with industrial collaborators whilst providing the perfect opportunity for companies to find out more about working with it.
We caught up with Bath IMI Manager, Dr Joanna Jordan (pictured right) about what the IMI is all about and what it’s bringing to Bath.
“Bath mathematicians and statisticians have a strong track record of collaborating with industry”
“It’s a win-win opportunity!” Joanna exclaims, “There is huge potential for maths to add value to every industrial sector; Bath University will also benefit from an increased engagement with business-relevant research challenges.”

“Bath mathematicians and statisticians have a strong track record of collaborating with industry. Long-term research partners include the Met Office, AMEC Foster Wheeler, and BT. Each year over 100 of our undergraduate students spend a year working in industry through the University’s successful undergraduate placement programme.”
“IMI is actively seeking to expand and diversify these relationships by offering a range of opportunities for engagement, from fast turnaround solutions to longer-term joint research projects.”
Unique offerings
The innovative and dual approach taken by the IMI of using mathematical modelling and data analysis can enable companies to predict outcomes, improve products, explain complex phenomena, optimise processes, and ultimately reduce costs.
Unique to Bath, IMI has built a team of experienced mathematical and statistical modellers who work on short-to-medium term industrial projects with the intellectual support of Bath academics.
“Our rapid response team means we can react quickly to new opportunities, and solve problems within tight industrial time frames”
Joanna explains: “Based at the University we are ideally placed to draw on subject-specific expertise from across campus to suit each project.”
“Our rapid response team means we can react quickly to new opportunities, and solve problems within tight industrial time frames and we hope that IMI will build many long-term mutually-beneficial collaborations, particularly with local companies.”
The launch
The Bath IMI are launching at Bath Assembly Rooms on Wednesday 28 October at 2pm to 7pm.
As well as offering a great chance to meet and collaborate with Bath academics and local companies, the IMI are also offering free one-to-one 15-minute consultancy sessions with a member of their team!
Check out the speakers due at the launch:
- Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, University of Bath (Vice-Chancellor)
- Professor Anthony Dooley, University of Bath (IMI Director)
- Professor John Toland, University of Cambridge
- Professor Julia Yeomans, University of Oxford
Booking is essential for this event – so, to sign up for free or for a consultation, register for a ticket to the IMI launch event via their Eventbrite page.
Thank you to Joanna for taking the time out of a busy schedule to chat to us. You can see more on the Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation at the Bath IMI website or by following them on Twitter @BathIMI.
