If you want to create or improve a professional website, by choosing a great domain name or promoting yourself through Google Maps, for example, you may like to hear what Lawrence Tilley, director and web designer at Bath-based website-creation company, Design for Digital, has to say…
Lawrence (pictured right) has put together a series of free, monthly talks aimed at improving your business website and online presence. He has been working with SMEs for over ten years, and over that time has noticed an increasing interest from clients to understand how their website works and how to promote it better. Now he wants to ensure that local businesses and people are doing the best they can to have effectively optimised and designed websites.
“[The free talks] enable local Bath companies to gain an insight into online marketing, as well as give them general tips and advice”
“These free Website Surgery talks – kindly held by The Guild Coworking Hub – enable local Bath companies to gain an insight into online marketing, as well as give them general tips and advice on topics such as creating a website brief,” explains Lawrence. The courses are also being made available online:
A brief encounter: Whether you’re looking for a brand-new website or
want to update an old one, Lawrence talks through his opinions on
what’s often missing from website briefs
“Over the years we’ve worked alongside brands such as Disney, Marvel and Corgi,” says Lawrence. “To complement our web design service, we also provide an online marketing package to take care of the day-to-day running of your website. This includes search engine optimisation, management of social network profiles, online advertising and content writing for news articles.” And now Lawrence wants to help share the skills the company has picked up doing this with you.
Free advice
There’s an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the session, and Lawrence welcomes any topics at this stage, so if you have any pressing website concerns, this could be the way to sort them out: “This is a great opportunity for businesses to get free advice and I’ll help provide a solution to their issues. The Website Surgery is also a great opportunity for Design for Digital to network and build our profile in the Bath business community,” says Lawrence.
“I explain any internet jargon clearly and thoroughly so you’re not left scratching your head”
The talks are aimed at all skill levels, so whether you’re a business owner simply wanting to learn more about websites and understand your marketing team, or a sole trader who wants to manage your website better, you’ll all be looked after. “I explain any internet jargon clearly and thoroughly so you’re not left scratching your head. Each talk is informal and I welcome questions throughout the session. A fellow web designer attended last month and we shared relevant techniques during the talk, so even web industry professionals should benefit,” said Lawrence.

With attendee numbers steadily growing, and the chance to play with Lego while learning, perhaps you should book a seat at one of these events sooner rather than later! “Recently, I used Lego as part of an exercise,” explains Lawrence, “which was not only fun, but assisted in proving a point to the audience. I’ve been in touch with several of the attendees since meeting then and they now feel that they’ve met a web company they can trust and get advice from in future.”
