A South-West startup whose electric voltage management device can help reduce your carbon footprint, increase appliance lifetime and save you money on your electricity bills, has released a new app to help you visualise the data. Bristol BlueGreen’s app tells you up-to-the-minute data on how much electricity you are using in your property, and it’s available to new users as part of a free trial.

The app has been developed by Bristol BlueGreen, based in the Bristol and Bath Science Park, to satisfy the money-conscious, eco-conscious, and tech curious.

“Homeowners and business owners can see for themselves what their energy habits are”

Downloading the app gives users a first-hand look at the amount of electricity they are using throughout the day, including energy spikes and energy lows. TechSPARK caught up with Managing Director, Rick Smith, who tells us, “The app means that homeowners and business owners can see for themselves what their energy habits are, and what they’re saving in real time.”

Bristol BlueGreen deviceIt works by using a using the BlueGreen device which provides the data via Wi-FI up to its server and then back to the app, and gives a detailed account of the incoming voltage to the property and what the total consumption and savings are.

As Rick explains, “All appliances must operate across a range of voltages to allow for the constant fluctuations necessary in electricity supply (216 volts to 253 volts in the UK). The average UK supply is 245 volts yet most appliances deliver the required service at 220 volts. The BlueGreen maintains the voltage at 220 volts allowing household appliances to work more efficiently, use less electricity and cost less to run.

“Slowly but surely our homes are becoming ‘smarter’ and this is one important aspect of that”

“This way of connecting up the home, joining the dots between the way we consume and the money we pay for it is an element of the internet of things. Slowly but surely our homes are becoming ‘smarter’ and this is one important aspect of that.”

Bristol BlueGreen has been gaining kudos in the industry having been shortlisted in the Environmental Tech category of the Edge Awards, hosted by Bristol Post, and Most Innovative Use of Hardware in TechSPARK’s own SPARKies awards.

Being involved in the local tech community is something that Rick would recommend to those building a business, he says, “Being based at the Bristol and Bath Science Park is a really innovating environment to be in, as there are so many incredible Bristol businesses doing exciting things with technology. When you’re around other people striving for the same thing as you, it spurs you on to make plans reality!”

“We’re also looking to take the product world-wide”

Part of Bristol BlueGreen’s future plans are to provide more small businesses with the power of energy saving, as Rick reveals,”We’re expanding into businesses – we’ve already got BlueGreen devices installed in Planet Pizza and Designers Barbers on Gloucester Road, Bristol, and we’re hoping we can help other business owners keep their costs down, too. We’re also looking to take the product world-wide, which is very exciting.

“People are truly fascinated with seeing what a household’s energy use looks like”

“We have found that people really love the app – it’s not so much surprising, as we also really love it, but people are truly fascinated with seeing what a household’s energy use looks like, which you can do by downloading our free app trial.”

To find out what your energy use looks like, you can watch a demo on how it all works and download the app from their website. You can keep up with Bristol BlueGreen’s developments by following them on Twitter @BlueGreenSES.
