The Broadcom Foundation is looking for its next representative from the UK for its MASTERS International programme.

The Foundation is looking for a bright, confident and independent 13-14 year old with an enthusiasm for all things science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Any enthusiastic, confident student who’s involved in hands-on science, engineering or technology-based projects can apply before the end of January.

Broadcom, now part of Avago, has a set-top box chip design centre in Bristol and also took over a Bristol design centre when it acquired Icera Semiconductor. The Foundation has been supported by Broadcom founder Henry Samueli since the company started to encourage more interest in science and technology.

What do you need to be a STEM ambassador?

After an initial selection process, invitations to the March National Final of the Broadcom Foundation MASTERS International will be sent out. Once at the final, impressing the judges will be key.  Students will discuss their interest in STEM, their projects and the impact STEM has on the world, and one student will be selected to represent the UK and travel to the US in May.

The student will accompany the UK students competing at the Intel ISEF competition and spend the week as part of the Broadcom MASTERS International joining an international delegation with 24 students from 17 countries.

You can see highlights from last year in the video below:

Charlie Hall (in the main picture above), from Swansea, represented the UK last year. He impressed the judges with his knowledge and enthusiasm and his being a key member of his school STEM Club.

Charlie was flown on an all-expenses paid trip to Phoenix where he joined his fellow international delegates. Students take part in a week-long STEM engagement, visiting universities, engaging with Scientists and Engineers and observing the Intel ISEF. The students shadow high school students and engage in exclusive events that foster team-building and leadership skills.

The application form is on the Young Engineers National Awards page and you can find out more about Broadcom MASTERS International on the Intel ISEF website or watch this YouTube video of the event.
