The latest research by global job site Adzuna shows that the South West’s tech scene is both the most lucrative and has the highest number of job opportunities available for skilled techies outside of London.

The research, which investigated the average salaries and most popular vacancies within IT across the main UK regions, showed that the South West had the highest average salary outside of London at £44,791.

“Understanding which skills are prioritised by tech employers in the South West affords the region’s tech experts the chance to refine and showcase their skills”

The results also revealed tech employment areas in which demand was highest – with the South West showing a surprisingly high number of opportunities within more specialist Agile Project Manager and Data roles in comparison to other areas of the country. Agile Project Managers in the South West also bagged the highest average salary at £74,429.

Adzuna’s Research Manager Becky Barr (pictured left) comments: “While the abundance of generalist IT and product support roles could be easily anticipated in the region, the high level of employer investment in agile project manager and data specialist roles was more of a surprise.

“With these types of role more typically found in London and the surrounding counties, it was great to see such specific roles really beginning to infiltrate the length and breadth of the nation.”

South West specialisms

Aside from specialist areas, the study showed the top three most advertised opportunities in the South West could be found as a Systems Engineer, IT Manager or Product Manager – contributing to hundreds of job vacancies between them.

Also included in the South West’s most advertised roles were Technical Leads, Cloud Engineers, Scrum Masters and Mobile Developers.

Commenting on Adzuna’s motivation to carry out this research Becky tells us: “The technology sector has proven itself the highest paying in the UK and with a wealth of job market data at our fingertips, the Adzuna team were intrigued to see which jobs in that industry pay the most.

“Tech was also one of the few sectors that are seeing year-on-year salary growth, so we wanted to see which jobs are driving this growth.”

She adds: “Any information that helps job seekers understand their local job market and informs them on the skills most sought after or more valued by employers is really powerful to help them refine and perfect their job hunt.

“Understanding which skills are prioritised by tech employers in the South West affords the region’s tech experts the chance to refine and showcase their skills to stand the best chance of bagging their dream job.”
