These past few months Mike Oram and Charlie Coggans, both trainers at Bath-based code school Mayden Academy, haven’t just been sharing their coding expertise with their own students – they’ve launched a brand new YouTube series ‘2 Devs on a Sofa’ to help other newbie coders better understand the process of learning to code.
“The aim of the vlog is to talk directly to anyone interested in learning to code”
Focusing in on life at Mayden Academy, the duo has already released four episodes in the past month, ranging from some of the pitfalls that new developers fall into, to National Coding Week.
You can take a look at their latest episode on National Coding Week below:
Charlie tells us: “Whilst planning the latest round of the Mayden Academy we found ourselves having a series of discussions that we thought would be helpful to anyone wanting to understand what we do and the process of learning to code. When visiting careers fairs we are often asked what is it like to learn to code and this vlog attempts to humanise the processes and let people know what to expect.
“You can expect interviews with students and hiring partners, technical chats about new technologies and discussions about meetups”
“The aim of the vlog is to talk directly to anyone interested in learning to code, whether it be through a formalised training program or just teaching themselves at home. It’s also a great place to talk about exciting upcoming stuff for us. For example at the moment we are very excited about the fast-approaching Bath Digital Festival – in particular the Mayden Academy talks Mike will be delivering for it.”
Coming up…
Now the pair has established a standard format involving having a casual chat, they’re keen to play with it a little more. Charlie explains: “You can expect interviews with students and hiring partners, technical chats about new technologies and discussions about meetups. And if we can convince one of our current students, who studied music at university, there will be a new theme tune. The beauty of running an informal vlog means we can make it up as we go along!
“We are also currently in the process of recording a series of quick reference programming videos ‘Mayden Academy Extras’ – these are going to be a maximum of 90 seconds explaining a particular programming topic. We are looking forward to getting these out as they will cut out 90% of the usual unnecessary stuff vloggers talk about when trying to find out about a technical topic on YouTube.”
If you like the sound of that, Mike and Charlie tell us they’re always keen for feedback and new content suggestions. You can let them know your thoughts by commenting on the videos by heading to the Mayden Academy YouTube channel or by getting in touch via Twitter here: @MaydenAcademy.
