Now’s the time then, to take advantage of limited-discount on superfast gigabit broadband. As part of a trial, the Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is offering vouchers worth £500 towards the cost of getting gigabit-ready broadband installed in local homes across Bristol and Bath as part of the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

Whether you work from home as a freelancer, are studying the latest technical innovations or building a business from your spare bedroom, having a reliable and fast internet connection is key to efficiency and growth, especially with broadband discount.

“We’re proud to be part of rolling this out and helping more residents to become more digitally literate”

The scheme has already helped small businesses and charities across the region, providing up to £3k to help businesses get gigabit-ready speeds, after the Bristol and Bath region was one of only six areas chosen as part of a £200 million project to pilot the UK’s fastest broadband.

What’s more, the Bristol and Bath region is the only area of the six to be running the residents’ scheme alongside to simultaneously help connect up local homes to gold-standard broadband – providing a bigger boost to the South West than anywhere else.

Broadband boost

Councillor Craig Cheney, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Finance, Governance and Performance says: “There are many homes throughout the Bristol area that are lagging behind when it comes to broadband connection speeds. The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme could have a really positive change for many residents.

“One of our key areas of focus as an administration is to reduce isolation and improve connectivity both physically and digitally. This scheme will help us in delivering these goals as well as making it easier for residents to enjoy home entertainment, complete homework or even apply for jobs. We’re proud to be part of rolling this out and helping more residents to become more digitally literate whilst improving their quality of life.”

Councillor Paul Myers, Cabinet Member for Community & Economic Regeneration at Bath & North East Somerset Council, adds: “There is a very real opportunity right now, whereby residents of Bath and North East Somerset could be eligible for up to £500 to get gigabit-capable broadband installed as part of a £2 million trial taking place in four areas around the UK.”
