This week’s Startup for 10 comes from Traced, a mobile security company from Swindon with an app that helps you to protect yourself from breaches of privacy and security on your mobile device.

Here to answer out 10 questions is Matt Boddy, CTO at Traced.

1. In your own words – what do you do?

Mobile devices are a place where our personal and professional lives meld and become one.  We aim to provide the best possible protection to everyone against breaches of privacy and security on their mobile.

2. What’s the most exciting thing about what you’re doing?

We’re doing something that could have a really positive impact on people’s lives. There are a lot of people personally affected by mobile malware and more specifically Stalkerware, which has been on the rise in cases of domestic abuse throughout the world.  We’re the first to find an innovative way to spot and stop Stalkerware by monitoring and flagging its behaviour in real-time on the device.

3. What are you most proud of so far?

We’re immensely proud of every part of the technology we’ve created here at Traced.  After each development sprint, we test it against real, in-the-wild, malware to see how it performs,  and after every sprint, the results just get better!

4. What have you found most difficult about being a start-up?

Having both of us (co-founders) exclusively worked in large enterprise environments, we’re still getting used to having to be the Salesperson, Marketing, Development, HR team and more.  Every day is a diverse challenge, but it’s also what makes it exciting!

5. What would you do differently if you started now?

Seek more assistance and advice with accountancy! As a founder, you will need to make important decisions with regard to accounting such as: how many shares do we issue, how do we value those shares etc. It’s very important to have the right assistance and guidance on these types of decisions and having a strong accountant can be an incredibly useful virtue for a startup.

6. Where do you think you’ll be in 12 months?

Still building, measuring and learning, and that will continue until we’re able to achieve our aim of providing the best possible protection against breaches of privacy and security for everyone.

7. What tools/people/services/organisations helped you most?

Close friends and family in the marketing and sales spaces have been invaluable!  Their guidance has really shaped us into a much more understandable tech company with a better direction.  If it weren’t for them, this starter for 10 would be littered with far more three-letter acronyms and little hope of ever becoming a profitable business.

8. What’s the best thing about being based in Swindon?

Although we’re not physically based out of Swindon, we’re still based out of our spare bedrooms in Oxford, we’ve found the TechSwindon community immensely helpful!  Their guidance and support have helped introduce us to some key contacts that will accelerate our go-to-market strategy.

9. What support does the tech scene need in Swindon?

It’s difficult to say having not been through a similar environment before. For us, it’s been fantastic to find a community that has been so helpful and has made so much time to help advise us where they think we need it.

10. Where can we find out more about you? and @tracedapp on Twitter!
