Bristol has been named as the best city in the UK outside of London for startups according to Startup Blink’s 2020 global report.

The city has moved up one place to overtake Manchester as the UK’s second city fin the Start-Up Ecosystem Rankings 2020, which reviewed 1,000 cities across 100 countries.

Bristol heads a list including Manchester, Brighton, Edinburgh and Glasgow as the best city for starting a business outside of England’s capital.

The data was published by research centre Startup Blink and took into account a geographic database of tens of thousands of start-ups, accelerators, and co-working spaces using an algorithm developed over five years.

There’s also good news for Bristol globally, as the city moved up 57 places to be named 68th best in the world. A better jump than any city from last year’s top 150.

As a whole, the UK retained the second position worldwide, behind the USA.

Startup Blink CEO, Eli David, had this to say on how startups are important in the time of global change: “Each and every one of us should look at how reality has changed and, instead of hoping it will go back to ‘normal’ adjust our business model for the new situation. Now is exactly our time to win. Opportunities are now opening up to transform every industry at a rate rarely seen before.”

If we remain open-minded enough to identify them, and fast enough to capture them, we will make it. Or at least have fun trying.”

Ben Shorrock, TechSPARK MD, said: “We’re excited but not surprised to see Bristol & Bath being recognised as one of the best places in the world to start up a business. A leap of 57 places in the global ranking shows that work being done by people across the ecosystem is really paying off. As we go through this global crisis the role of startups becomes increasingly important and we can’t wait to see what our ecosystem develops next”
