Bristol Based Start-Up, Eleria, Launches Revolutionary Period Cup Cleaning & Sterilising Case

Born from research into attitudes toward sustainable period products and shaped by a user-centred approach, Eleria is the latest innovation in convenient eco-conscious period care.

Founded by University of Bristol alumni Monica Wai and Kira Goode, Eleria has just launched its compact cleaning and sterilising case, designed to make cleaning the cup in public spaces easier and more discreet, as well as turn the sterilisation process into a quick and simple task.

During their time at the University of Bristol, Kira Goode, 26, and Monica Wai, 27, conducted research to understand the barriers to uptake of the menstrual cup.

They found that cleaning the cup in public toilets, where before you would need to run out and rinse it in the sink before returning to the stall to pop it back in, as well as sterilising it in shared living spaces, the current process being to boil it in a pot of water of the hob for 15 minutes, were the two main problems.

This led to their development of Eleria’s Portable Cleaning & Sterilising Case, made in the UK from medical grade silicone and recycled medical grade plastic. Designed to fit discreetly in even the smallest of handbags, the Cleaning & Sterilising Case allows users to clean their cup in public restrooms and sterilise their cup in shared living spaces quickly, simply and discreetly. Eleria also offers five variations of period cups, designed to meet the unique needs of menstruators. The Green One is ideal for first-time users, while additional shapes and sizes in various colours are also available to suit different preferences.

They also provide top tips, advice, and educational content on period health, aiming to break down taboos and empower menstruators to embrace their periods confidently. 

Eleria tested their products with independent research participants ahead of their launch, one participant said; “It was a relief to finally have something that will sort out this problem for me …. just can’t believe why this wasn’t done sooner’, when asked about how the cup had effected their experience cleaning a period cup in public, another saying ‘It definitely improved my experience of using a cup as it gave me reassurance it was clean between uses.”

• In the UK, up to 2 billion disposable period products are flushed down the loo every year. 
• Around the world, an estimated 200,000 tonnes of period products are disposed of every year. 
• The average person who menstruates uses 11,000 disposable period products in their lifetime. They aren’t recyclable and can contain plastics and chemicals, so each and every one of those products contribute to our impact on our planet, whether they are incinerated, or washed up on our beaches. 
• A Reusable Period Cup can last for up to 10 years, therefore making the switch can reduce the waste caused by disposable period products by over 99%.
