How did you first get into tech/innovation?
While I was at university, Facebook started becoming extremely popular amongst students and brands started picking up on social media as an opportunity, and so did I. My first post graduate job role was a social media manager at an agency in London helping brands build their social strategies.
What did your career path look like before landing your current role?
I’ve always worked in the digital world but my journey has taken me from marketing and advertising to project management, consultancy and then into digital product, where I am now!
What does your role involve day-to-day?
As all product managers know, no day looks the same!
A typical day will start with coordinating with the product squad and from there, it’s a mixture of communication across the business and with our wonderful customers, mixed with deeper work; analysing data, writing up documentation and getting stuck into product research.
What challenges have you faced working in tech, and how did you overcome them?
Although I ‘work in tech’ and always have, I am not a coder.
It is a challenge to keep up with the ever evolving best practices and additionally, adapting to the rapid shift towards everything LLM. I try to take time to take some free courses online to keep myself up to date. There is so much information available out there to take advantage of. Though I think I’ve learnt most from listening to the people I work with who really know their stuff.
Was there a moment or opportunity that helped you break into the industry?
Not a moment as such, but I’ve worked with some really inspirational and encouraging leaders who have given me the confidence to push myself and believe in what I can do. Never underestimate your influence as a leader!
What advice would you give to women who want to work in tech or innovation?
If you’re thinking about working in tech, there is really nothing stopping you. This is an extremely varied and accessible industry. I’ve been lucky enough to work in some very community-like, open minded companies looking at what you can do, rather than who you are. And the great thing about tech, if you can’t find something that suits you perfectly, you can build it yourself!
What do you love about working in the South West tech ecosystem?
The south west is an exciting place to work in tech. It’s a supportive and friendly community with some really brilliant minds. There’s always an event or a meet up to go to where people share their knowledge and are keen to get to know you.
