Met Office
Met Office
Company Overview
Right across the world, every single day, people make decisions based on the weather and the changing climate. As the UK’s national meteorological service, our critical weather forecasts and groundbreaking weather and climate science help people across the globe plan for today, and the world ready for tomorrow.
We take in 200 billion observations every day and, from those, we generate around 3,000 forecasts daily. Our supercomputer can perform 14,000 trillion calculations per second, and we hold half an exabyte of data as part of our climate record. That’s five with 17 noughts after it!
We don’t just work in the UK either. We are part of a huge international collaborative of national meteorological organisations, with international programmes that focus on research such as climate change in the Amazon and drought and flooding in Uganda.
And technology underpins everything we do. We have regular opportunities for people to join us in development and operational roles, ranging from working on mobile to supercomputers, and on-premise to cloud.
A recent independent economic study concluded that the Met Office delivers benefits worth £56 billion to the UK economy. This is equivalent to a return of almost £19 for every £1 of public money spent.

What makes the Met Office a great place to work?
Since 2023 we’ve been certified a great place to work. This accreditation is given by Great Place to Work UK to organisations that display an exceptional workplace culture. It’s based on feedback from our employees who say the Met Office is a safe, fun and caring place they’re proud to work at.
We’re also featured on Great Place to Work UK’s lists of UK’s Best Workplaces for Tech in 2023 and 2024, as well as their list of UK’s Best Workplaces for Women in 2023.
Our promise as an employer is: we will look after your world at work; we will, as an organisation, look after the world; we will immerse you in a world of expertise, and we will ensure you have a world in which to develop and learn.
From your first day to every day, we provide an experience that’s career-enhancing and life-supporting. We’re respectful of every background and focused on helping you be the best you can be. And, from amazing learning and development to focusing on how work and life work better together, we look after our people, so you can look after the world.
what employees think
“I love my role because every day is different. I like how varied it is and the fact that every day there are different customers to talk to, different problems to solve, and different solutions to work on. It's the culture and the people here that make it for me. Even though people come and go, it’s the atmosphere. The running theme through all of this is that as an organisation, the Met Office is just a great place to work.”
— Beth Harper, Development Operations Engineer
