Silicon Gorge startup pitching competition returns to Bristol

Tech and digital startups are encouraged to apply for one of the most exciting pitching competitions in the south west
7th August 2017

In what is always an exciting date in the South West tech cluster’s calendar, the Silicon Gorge pitching competition will return this October and applications are open now until 6pm, Friday 15 September 2017.

The competition, which is headline sponsored by global bank Barclays and inward investment agency Invest Bristol & Bath, will bring together 10 of the most exciting early-stage tech and digital startups looking for investment between £500,000 and £2 million. They will pitch to a room full of high-profile investors from across the region and beyond at the Silicon Gorge Investor Showcase as part of the innovation celebrating Venturefest event on 17 October 2017.

“Silicon Gorge offers startups an amazing opportunity to showcase their businesses to high profile investors”

With last year’s Silicon Investor Showcase top 10 including EventHalo, an event management app that’s been used by internationally renowned world music festival WOMAD, Forth With Life, whose health tracking app is now being used by elite athletes, and Rovco, designers of autonomous subsea survey robots – whose founder won one of Entrepreneurial Spark startup accelerator’s highest of accolades ‘Entrepreneur of the Moment’ – it’s clear that startups that make it through Silicon Gorge go from success to success.

Abigail Frear, the showcase’s organiser (pictured left), tells us: “Silicon Gorge is a highlight in the South West tech calendar and offers startups in the region an amazing opportunity to showcase their businesses to high profile investors from both inside and outside of the region.

“As well as increasing their potential for investment, the showcase offers a unique chance for startups to become more involved with other businesses working on building innovative ideas in the same space – collaborating, networking and learning how to present a killer pitch in the process.”

Future smart tech

This year the theme is smart tech and while applications are open to any tech companies, the judges will particularly be looking for technology that will impact how people live and work in the future.

Startups that make it through the first round of the competition will be invited to attend one of two pitching competitions in Bristol and Bath in late September, in which local entrepreneurs and experts will select the 10 startups to go forward to the final.

The final 10 startups will also be given the opportunity to perfect their pitches before the big day at a free pitching workshop.
Silicon Gorge is a partnership of local South West organisations which aims to help startups and scale -ups find paths to investment. Current partners of Silicon Gorge include TechSPARK, Invest Bristol and Bath, SETsquared, Engine Shed, University of Bath Innovation Centre, Rocketmakers and VR World Congress.
