The newly opened National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) represents a major step forward in advancing quantum technologies in the UK. By providing access to facilities for industry and academia, the Centre aims to tackle key challenges such as healthcare innovation, energy efficiency, and climate change. Its focus on making quantum computing scalable highlights the growing need for national infrastructure to support this rapidly evolving field.
At a recent Bristol Tech Festival roundtable, industry leaders emphasised the importance of collaboration between the UK’s regional quantum clusters. Dagmar Steffens of the West of England Combined Authority highlighted the need for specialisation, such as Bristol’s strength in quantum photonics and Glasgow’s focus on lasers, to build a unified and competitive national ecosystem. Shared infrastructure, like testbeds and demo facilities, was identified as critical to allow companies to showcase their technologies in real-world scenarios, fostering investor confidence and accelerating development.
Collaboration isn’t just about sharing infrastructure—it’s also about leveraging the unique strengths of regions to collectively tackle global challenges. Representatives from government and industry agreed that public-private partnerships are essential for bridging funding gaps and supporting the commercialisation of quantum technologies. These partnerships can align regional efforts with national priorities, ensuring resources are strategically allocated to areas that deliver the most impact.
However, there are obstacles to overcome, including entrenched legacy systems in industries like telecommunications and aerospace. These systems often resist change, but roundtable participants argued that positioning quantum technologies as complementary—through pilot programs and testbeds—could demonstrate their value and encourage adoption. Success will also depend on addressing skills shortages, with universities like Bristol playing a key role in training the next generation of quantum experts.

With international competition intensifying, the UK has an opportunity to emulate successful European initiatives by fostering interconnected quantum networks. By aligning its regions and prioritising specialisation, the UK can offer comprehensive solutions to global partners and attract significant inward investment. A Boston Consulting Group report projects that quantum computing could generate $450–850 billion in economic value by 2040, underscoring the need for unified action.
The UK’s quantum sector stands at a pivotal moment. Strategic collaboration, robust infrastructure, and a shared vision are essential to unlock its full potential. By working together, regional clusters can create a thriving ecosystem that establishes the UK as a global leader in quantum technologies.
