The Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) has kicked off an independent review of university computer science courses and employability and is looking for companies to share their experiences of finding and employing developers.

“We regularly hear that graduates from computer science disciplines do not have the broad range of skills they require. The aim of this review is to try to identify solutions”

Sir Nigel Shadbolt, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Southampton University, will be leading the review which will help to ensure that the UK has the computer science graduates that it needs in the coming years. As he writes in the survey’s introduction letter: “We regularly hear from employers and industry that graduates from computer science disciplines do not have the broad range of skills they require. The aim of this review is to better understand what lies behind these concerns and to try to identify solutions.”

He adds: “Graduates from computer science disciplines are crucial to helping the UK build an economy that can compete in an increasingly digital and technology-driven age. As industry and society as a whole are engaging more and more with the world through new digital technologies it is critical that we are producing the graduates the UK needs to ensure that it can innovate, adapt and continue to thrive in a digital 21st century.”
