Do you own or run one of the 15 million websites that are currently powered by WordPress? Do you want to know more about how to use it better? Whether you use WordPress for designing, writing content, building businesses or expanding functionality, then Bristol’s upcoming Wordcamp conference may well be for you.
“WordCamps are a good place to learn from developers and users and exchange information”
We caught up with one of the Wordcamp Bristol organisers, Janice Tye, to find out more and how people can get involved with the event.
TechSPARK: What is Wordcamp Bristol and who is it for?
Janice Tye: WordCamp Bristol is a not-for-profit, 2-day conference on all things to do with WordPress being held on the 12-14 May. WordPress is the most popular CMS (content management system) and blogging platform used world-wide and supported by WordPress.org and hundreds of thousands of developers in all countries.
If you use WordPress in any capacity you will be hooked and will want to learn more. WordCamps are a good place to learn from developers and users and exchange information. There is something for all levels of experience.
TS: What kind of speakers are you looking for?
JT: We are interested in people talking about their personal experiences of WordPress, their approaches to using and/or developing for WordPress.
Some topics could be: Marketing for web developers, SSL certificate application, SEO for WordPress, Writing a web design project proposal and working with clients, the REST API, Plugin development (any aspect of), website security best practice, Migrating a site to live server, cleaning a hacked site, content building, current web design trends, how to choose a web host, working with SASS, making your WordPress site multilingual, working with multisite, Tools for SEO, Building your first theme, Custom posts and so on. If you are interested you can let us know at the Wordcamp Call for Speakers page.
TS: How else can people get involved with the event?
JT: There is also a call for sponsors and volunteers.
TS: You are also involved with organising the Bristol WordPress People meetup, how often do you meet and what do these events entail?
JT: We meet once a month on the first Tuesday of each month. 6.30pm for 7pm, in the upstairs meeting room at the Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, King Street, Bristol. We usually finish at about 9.30-10pm depending on how much we talk.
We get a drink downstairs and bring it up and have a break halfway through. We have speakers on various topics and we have workshops. The room buzzes with enthusiasm and you always leave having learnt something new.
TS: What’s next for Bristol WordPress People?
JT: We aim to grow our contacts so that we can plan a programme of talks further into the future. It would be nice to be able to put on WordCamp Bristol every year and to do that effectively we need to have a ready pool of support and speakers.
Thanks to Janice for answering our questions. Tickets are available for Wordcamp Bristol now and you can sign up to the Bristol WordPress People Meetup here or follow them on Twitter here: @WPBristolPeeps
