The Summer Reading Challenge is a free annual event that challenges the children of Bristol to read six books over their six-week summer holiday.
It began in Bristol libraries on Saturday 13 July with the theme Space Chase – which is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
In order to take part in the Space Chase, all children need to do is sign up at a library near them. Here they will be given a collector folder to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey!
The Space race is on
The children won’t be embarking on this exciting challenge alone. They will be teaming up with the futuristic family, The Rockets, who will guide them on the space mission as they track down books stolen by a mischievous group of aliens.
Throughout this reading journey, children will receive special stickers, some even coming with mysterious smells. By adding the stickers to their collectable mission folders, the adventurous readers will be helping The Rockets solve clues, dodge asteroids and discover the missing books!
Children who successfully read six books over the summer will win a shiny medal and a certificate celebrating their achievement.
And the Space Chase isn’t the only thing children can get involved in this summer! There is a whole host of events and activities planned at Bristol libraries for families to enjoy to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Asher Craig, Cabinet Member who has the responsibility for libraries says, “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great wat to get children interested in books and reading.
“Libraries can help inspire children to become more confident readers and provide free entertainment during the summer holidays.”
If you want to find out about more competitions, challenges, author interviews, news and about the book sorter (which recommends what children might like to read next), go to the Summer Reading Challenge website any time.
