With more and more research suggesting that tech is one of the least diverse industries in the UK, it’s becoming clear that the gaming niche isn’t in the clear either. For example, just 14% of workers in the gaming industry are female.
Tackling this, Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) in Bristol is offering a six-week series of events and space for any and all individuals or groups working and playing in the gaming world to come together. But you need to be quick, applications close on 10 October
“We’d love to hear from any gamers who have an idea they would like to develop but who don’t have access to the space or kit to make it happen”
On 4 – 5 November they’re hosting the third annual South Bristol Gaming and Anime Expo, which will be followed by a week-long takeover of the space by Grrrl Games – a Bristol-based group for women making games.

After this opening fortnight, what happens in the test space from 13 November – 15 December is up to you.
Jess Linington (pictured left), Learning Manager at KWMC and co-organiser of Grrrl Games, explains: “Knowle West Media Centre is committed to championing diversity in the creative industries and providing opportunities for people of all backgrounds to explore technology and the arts – particularly those who haven’t had the opportunity to experiment, create and share their work with others.
“We hope our gaming test space will provide a fun and creative place for people to come together and raise the profile of new gaming talent working in Bristol.
“You can also trial your ideas with a fantastic group of young people who meet at KWMC on a Wednesday evening”
“We’d love to hear from any gamers who have an idea they would like to develop but who don’t have access to the space or kit to make it happen at the moment. We’re also keen to hear from people who share our commitment to increasing diversity within the creative industries. During your take over you’ll need to produce something you can leave behind for people to engage with. Whether that’s a game, artwork, or something else entirely – that’s up to you.
“Gamers involved in the take-over will have access to KWMC’s space and kit. A materials budget is available and you can also trial your ideas with a fantastic group of young people who meet at KWMC on a Wednesday evening.”
So if you have a great idea that could impact the lack of diversity in gaming, make sure you get your application in quick – the deadline of 10 October is fast approaching. For more details on how to get involved in the take-over, head to the KWMC ‘Gamers Wanted’ page.
